Matt is able to meet the student where they are in their development. He knows how hard to push, how difficult
it should be, and what to expect. These requirements are different for my two children, and he has the balance
just right for both of them. For the spring recital, he allowed the children to pick the piece they wanted to play.
My son had heard something on Spotify and wanted to play it. Matt allowed him to do this and helped him work
it up to recital level. The motivation for working on a piece of his choice was fantastic.

Matthew has been our 8 year-old daughter’s piano teacher for the past two years. From the beginning, Matthew has displayed a keen awareness of our daughter’s level and pace at which she comfortably acquires new skills/knowledge. As such, he is able to challenge her to achieve her best at just the right speed, without risking the frustration that may come when one is pushed too quickly. Matthew has an expectation of practice and discipline, which perfectly matches our daughter’s eagerness to be challenged. When necessary, given our daughter’s intermittently wandering attention, Matthew takes on a commanding tone which promptly refocuses her efforts to the task at hand. But nearly in the same breath, he frequently follows with genuine praise and positive reinforcement, which works with great success for our daughter (and I imagine most children).
