Meet the Teacher

Matthew Xiong
Conservatory-trained pianist, artist-teacher, and founder of Talent Piano Studio.
Matthew Xiong is a Quincy-based pianist and teacher with nearly two decades of teaching experience working with students ranging from young beginners to advanced pianists pursuing competitions, auditions, examinations, and serious repertoire study.
Training & Background
He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory and his Master of Music degree from Boston University, where his studies focused on piano performance, pedagogy, musicianship, and artistic development.
His training includes work with respected pianists and teachers including Margaret Hair, John Perry, Robert McDonald, Gabriel Chodos, Bruce Brubaker, and Boaz Sharon.
Artistic Approach
Matthew’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that piano study is not merely technical training, but the cultivation of listening, discipline, imagination, and artistic sensitivity.
His lessons emphasize sound production, physical coordination, musical structure, and expressive depth, helping students build both technical fluency and genuine musicianship over time.
Student Development
Students from Talent Piano Studio have performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, participated in regional and international competitions, received recognition through adjudicated festivals and examinations, and pursued advanced musical study across a broad range of repertoire and performance traditions.
Performance & Repertoire
As both a performer and teacher, Matthew’s work is rooted in a deep engagement with classical piano literature spanning Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, and contemporary repertoire.
His performance background continues to inform his teaching in areas of interpretation, technical development, sound production, and artistic communication.
At Talent Piano Studio, students are taught not only how to play the piano, but how to listen, think, practice, and grow as musicians.
Teaching Philosophy
Matthew’s lessons are warm, focused, and highly individualized. Students build strong foundations in technique, rhythm, reading, sound, and practice habits while also developing musical expression, confidence, discipline, and artistic maturity.
The studio works best with students who are curious, engaged, and willing to grow steadily over time. Because instruction is highly individualized, the studio maintains limited availability and seeks students who are a strong mutual fit for its teaching approach and long-term philosophy.
